The lonely sheriff. Image of George W. Bush in Newsweek Poland in 2001 - 2004.

Przedmiotem mojej pracy jest analiza wizerunku G.W. Busha w polskim wydaniu Newsweeka w latach 2001-2004. Chcę udowodnić, że amerykański prezydent był postrzegany przez polskich i zagranicznych dziennikarzy jako postać negatywna. W pierwszym rozdziale omówiłam teoretyczne podejścia do wizerunku. Zaczęłam od przedstawienia roli mediów w kształtowaniu wizerunku, charakterystyki pism społeczno-politycznych, krótkiej historii amerykańskiej edycji Newsweeka i początkach tego tygodnika na polskim rynku wydawniczym. Następnie wyodrębniłam różne definicje wizerunku politycznego i cechy charakteryzujące dobrego polityka. Na końcu opisałam krótko rolę stereotypów w kształtowaniu wizerunku.Drugi rozdział to interpretacja artykułów, w których pojawiła się postać Busha. Najpierw napisałam jak dużo (stopień ekspozycji) i jak często (miara zainteresowania) pisano o amerykańskim prezydencie. Potem przedstawiłam dziennikarzy, którzy zajmowali się tą tematyką. Teksty podzieliłam ze względu na ich formę, a wywiady interpretowałam w osobnym podrozdziale. Najczęściej występującą tematykę podzieliłam na cztery kategorie: wydarzenia 11 września i terroryzm, polityka na Bliskim i Środkowym Wschodzie, relacje ze światowymi przywódcami i polityka wewnętrzna USA. Ten rozdział zakończyłam analizą fotografii i okładek.W trzecim rozdziale odpowiadam na pytanie: kim był Bush? Żeby to zrobić należało najpierw wyszczególnić najczęściej nadawane mu role. Na podstawie informacji z drugiego rozdziału stworzyłam sylwetkę amerykańskiego prezydenta i dokonałam interpretacji ewolucji jego wizerunku w czasie. Na końcu opisałam słabe i mocne strony Busha. Na ich podstawie oceniłam postawę prezydenta.

The subject of my work is to analyze the image of G.W. Bush in the Polish edition of Newsweek in 2001-2004. I want to prove that the American president was seen by Polish and foreign journalists as a negative character.In the first chapter I discuss the theoretical approach to the image. I started the presentation of the role of media in shaping the image, characteristics of socio-political writings, short history of the American edition of Newsweek magazine and the beginnings of this magazine on the Polish publishing market. Then I described different definitions of the political image and characteristics of good politician. Finally, I describe briefly the role of stereotypes in creating the image.The second chapter is an interpretation of articles that appeared in description of Bush. First, I wrote how much (degree of exposure) and how often (a measure of interest) has been written about the American president. Then I presented the journalists who have been dealing with this subject. I divided texts because of their form and interpreted interviews in a separate section.The most popular topics consist of four categories: 9/11 and terrorism, policy in Near and Middle East, relationships with world leaders, U.S. domestic politics. This chapter I finished analyzing photographs and covers.In the third part I answers the question: Who was Bush? To do this, I have to specify the role usually assigned to him. Based on information from the second chapter, I created a image of an American president and an interpretation of the evolution of the image at a time. Finally, I describe the strengths and weaknesses Bush. On that basis I evaluated the attitude of the president.
