Will Taipei become New Delhi's strategic partner? : evolution of India-Taiwan relations
The purpose of the chapter is to analyse the evolution of India–Taiwan relations since 2016 under Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Tsai Ing-Wen. It hypothesises that overall, Taiwan’s position as India’s partner has relatively increased since 2016, especially after 2020. The chapter recognizes the following main drivers of India–Taiwan relations: (i) India–China fluctuations, with special attention paid to the border dispute; (ii) India and Taiwan’s shared vision of inclusive and multilateral regional policy, as expressed by India’s Act East Policy and Taiwan’s New Southbound Policy; (iii) economic cooperation, with particular stress on its formal basis, the trade level, and Taiwanese investments in India; as well as (iv) the development of the bilateral health cooperation related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
