Gabriel Marcel’s phenomenological metaphysics

Metafizyka, tak jak rozumie ją Gabriel Marcel, jest przede wszystkim rozpoznawaniem pytań, mających swe źródło w egzystencjalnym, głęboko zakorzenionym w podmiocie niepokoju. Pytania o to, czym jest „ja”, na czym polega jego odniesienie do innych podmiotów, co jest istotą bytu oraz czy istnieje Bóg to pytania par excellence metafizyczne. Metafizyka jest jednak nie tylko rozpoznaniem pytań, lecz także próbą udzielenia na nie odpowiedzi. Dlatego potrzebuje ona metody, która zapewniłaby przejście od pytania do prawdziwej odpowiedzi. Taką metodą jest fenomenologia, którą Marcel rozumie jednak inaczej niż Husserl i Heidegger. Fenomenologia Marcela jest bowiem otwarta na transcendencję, a zatem uznaje, że byt, jako taki, stanowi tajemnicę, a nie jedynie poznawczy problem. Dlatego Marcel podkreśla, że podmiot nie może nigdy poznać bytu, lecz w nim jedynie uczestniczyć, i to o tyle tylko, o ile, poprzez wierność, nadzieję i miłość, otwiera się na innych.

Gabriel Marcel's metaphysics is mainly based on identifying questions, which come from existential anxiety and are closely related with the subject. Question about what's „I” and how exactly refer to other subject, what's the essence of being and if the God exist are questions par excellence methaphysical. However metaphysics is not use only to recognize question, but it is also an attempt to get right answer on that. This is reason why metaphysics needs method, which is able to go from question to answer. The method is phenomenology, which Marcel understands diffrent that Husserl and Heidegger. Marcel's phenomenology is open for transcendence, thus being is a mistery not only cognitive problem. Therefore Marcel enhance, that subject is unable to cognize being, but it can only take part in, as much as it opens for another, through faithfulness, hope and love.
