Worker reproduction in eusocial Hymenoptera

Kolonie eusocjalnych błonkówek charakteryzują się reprodukcyjnym podziałem pracy. Funkcję reprodukcyjną z reguły pełni królowa, robotnice natomiast są całkowicie bezpłodne lub częściowo ograniczają swoją płodność. Co więcej robotnice przeważnie pilnują się nawzajem, aby żadna z nich nie składała własnych jaj (ang. worker policing). Istnieje jednak wiele przykładów odstępstw od tej zasady. W tej pracy zostały omówione wybrane przykłady reprodukcji robotnic u pszczoły miodnej Apis mellifera i trzmieli Bombus terrestris. Przedstawiono tzw. rebeliantki pojawiające się w gnieździe po podziale kolonii, a także reprodukcję robotnic po osieroceniu rodziny. Omówione zostały również anarchistki, u których reprodukcja uwarunkowana jest genetycznie, a także zjawisko telitokii. Dodatkowo opisano antagonistyczne zachowania robotnic u trzmieli. Przyczyny reprodukcji robotnic są różne. Wiele wskazuje na to, iż robotnice pozostają sterylne w sytuacjach, kiedy takie zachowanie maksymalnie zwiększa ich łączne dostosowanie. Gdy natomiast pojawia się zagrożenie, że brak własnej reprodukcji nie jest optymalną strategią, robotnice zmieniają swoje zachowanie na bardziej samolubne i podejmują reprodukcję.

Eusocial colonies are characterized by reproductive division of labour. Generally only the queen performs the functions of reproductive while the workers are sterile or they partially restrict their fertility. What is more, the workers usually watch each other that none of them ovipostion (worker policing). However, there are many examples of exceptions to this rule. In this thesis there are presented some examples of workers’ reproduction in honey bee Apis mellifera and bumble bee Bombus terrestris. There are presented the rebel workers, which appear in the nest after the division of the colony and the workers’ reproduction when the colony is orphaned. There are also discussed the anarchistic workers which oviposition is conditioned by genetic mutations and phenomenon of thelytoky. In addition, there are described antagonistic behaviour of the bumblee bees workers. The causes of workers’ reproduction are various. Although, there are indications that the workers remain sterile when such behaviour maximizes their total inclusive fitness. In fact, when there is a risk that the lack of their own reproduction is not the optimal strategy, the workers change their behavior to more selfish and take the reproduction.
