The role of perception and the body in revealing intersubjectivity in Maurice Merleau-Ponty's philosophy

Praca dotyczy zagadnienia intersubiektywności we wczesnej filozofii Maurice Merleau-Ponty’ego. Autor poszukuje odpowiedzi na pytanie: w jaki sposób cielesna interakcja ze światem przyczynia się do odsłonięcia Innego? W tym celu w pracy poruszane jest zagadnienie fundamentalnych koncepcji „Fenomenologii percepcji”: percepcji oraz ciała własnego. W pierwszej części badaniu poddana została koncepcja percepcji, w celu ujawnienia jej źródłowości w dostępie do świata. Poprzez opis podstawowych struktur zmysłowego dostępu do świata, autor dowodzi źródłowości percepcji, która umożliwia: 1) przedrefleksyjny, nie-egologiczny dostęp do świata, 2) autentyczny związek ze światem. W drugiej części autor opisuje medium dostępu do świata – ciało własne. Badanie jego podstawowych struktur tj. schematu cielesnego oraz intencjonalności cielesnej umożliwia wywiedzenie kluczowych wniosków: 1) ogólności ciała jako egzystencjalnej struktury podmiotu, 2) sensotwórczej roli ciała poprzedzającej sens refleksyjny. Na podstawie powyższych analiz autor przedstawia charakterystykę intersubiektywnej struktury świata ze szczególnym naciskiem na rolę percepcji i ciała własnego w jej odsłanianiu. Prezentując „ślad Innego” w świecie, autor wykazuje, iż inny dany jest w sposób bezpośredni w obrębie prerefleksyjnej świadomości wyłaniającej się z cielesnej interakcji ze światem. W konsekwencji intersubiektywność zostaje wyrażona jako intercielesność tj. egzystencjalny splot ucieleśnionych świadomości. Powyższe rozważania autor wzbogaca polemiką podnoszącą problem granic dostępu do Innego w źródłowej percepcji.

The aim of paper is an exploration of the issue of intersubjectivity in the early philosophy of Maurice Merleau-Ponty. The author seeks an answer to the question: how does bodily interaction with the world contribute to the unveiling of the Other? The paper addresses the fundamental concepts of the "Phenomenology of Perception" - Perception and the self-body. In the first part, the concept of perception is examined in order to reveal its source in accessing the world. Through a description of the basic structures of sensory access to the world, the author argues for the sourceiness of perception, which makes it possible to: 1) pre-reflective, non-egological access to the world, and 2) an authentic relationship with the world. In the second part, the author explores the medium of access to the world - the self-body The study of its basic structures, i.e. the bodily schema and bodily intentionality, derives two key conclusions: 1) the generality of the body as an existential structure of the subject, 2) the sense-making role of the body preceding reflective sense. On the basis of the above analyses, the author presents a characterisation of the intersubjective structure of the world with particular emphasis on the role of perception and one's own body in its unveiling. By presenting the 'trace of the Other' in the world, the author demonstrates that the other is given in a direct way within the prereflective consciousness emerging from bodily interaction with the world. Consequently, intersubjectivity will be expressed as intercorporality i.e. an existential entanglement of embodied consciousnesses. The author enriches the above considerations with a polemic raising the problem of the limits of access to the other in source perception.
