Hubris and Will to Power. Analysis of Matthew Barney’s Cremaster Cycle

Cykl Cremaster Matthew Barney’a jest dziełem polimorficznym, które opisałam poprzez analizę kontekstu kulturowego. Jest to próba przybliżenia kondycji sztuki postmodernistycznej, jak również typu struktury narracyjnej wyrastającej z gruntu postmodernistycznego, jaką jest hipertekst. Dalej skupiając się na wcześniejszych przykładach twórczości artysty, wydobywam kluczowe dla niego tematy, które zostaną rozwinięte i pogłębione w Cyklu Cremaster. Do ich spectrum zaliczymy liczne nawiązania biologiczne, transgresję, hipertroficzny rozwój, hybrydyczność, androgeniczność, potrzebę hubrystyczna, która jest motorem wielu działań, oraz dyscyplinę. Część analityczna przeprowadzona jest przy zastosowaniu metody nurtu archetypiczno- mitologicznego. Wybór narzędzia analitycznego wiedziony jest kontekstem merytorycznym utworu, który bazuje na symbolu i micie. Znaczenie opiera się przede wszystkim na gnostyckim micie i symbolice masońskiej w połączeniu ze wspomnianymi wyżej licznymi odnośnikami biologicznymi użytymi dla pełnego zobrazowania dualnego aspektu świata przedstawionego w Cremasterze. Cykl Cremaster jest przykładem specyficznego typu komunikacji ponadwerbalnej. Z hipertekstualnej struktury narracyjnej wydobywa się struktura podświadomości. Matthew Barney's Cremaster Cycle has been described as a polymorphic peace of art, which I try to analyse and explain through the cultural context. It is an attempt to investigate the condition of postmodern art, as well as a narrative structure that grows out of the background of postmodern hypertext. As I continue to focus on the artist's previous work, I bring out the key themes which are developed later in the Cremaster Cycle. The theme’s spectrum includes numerous biological references, such as transgression, hypertrophic development, hybridity, androgenic creatures, hubris need, which is a drive for many activities and the discipline. The substantive context of the Cremaster Cycle, which is based on the symbol and myth in general, guided me to select the analytical tool, so the analytical part is based on the archetypically-mythological method. The meaning of the cycle is primarily based on the gnostic myth and masonic symbolism combined with numerous biological references as it has been already mentioned above. The full picture shows the meaning of human being existence in the dual world, which has been described within the Cremaster Cycle. The Cycle is an example of a specific type of communication, which stays beyond any verbal aspect. The hyper-textual structure is the structure of the narrative, which brings out the structure of subconscious. The potential of the physical body reflects the potential of the soul. By presenting the will of power and the strict discipline, Matthew Barney expresses the possibility of transcendental transgression, which bears the imprint of pride – hubris.
