The Stereotypical Image of Poland and Poles in the Polish Language Textbooks for the Breakthrough Level (A1)

Stereotypy istnieją w każdym języku i w każdej kulturze. Wielu badaczy, takich jak na przykład Walter Lippmann, Adam Schaff, Uta Quasthoff, Hilary Putnam, Jerzy Bartmiński prowadziło badania na temat natury i funkcji stereotypów. Zastanawiano się również nad czynnikami wpływającymi na ich trwałość.W teoretycznej części pracy zaprezentowano wyniki tych badań. Ukazano również jak przeciętni Polacy widziani są przez swoich sąsiadów: Ukraińców, Niemców i Czechów (stereotypy narodowe/etniczne), a także jak sami widzą siebie (autostereotyp).Podręczniki do nauki języka obcego mają na celu nie tylko podnieść kwalifikacje językowe uczniów, ale i zaznajomić ich z kulturą i realiami danego kraju. Prezentacja ma oczywiście tendencję do bycia stereotypową. Powinna jednak wzmacniać pozytywny obraz danej nacji oraz jej kultury, tak by zainteresować uczących się. Praca pokazuje jakie stereotypy można znaleźć w podręcznikach do języka polskiego dla poziomu A1, wydanych po roku 2000 oraz jaki obraz Polaków i Polski "rysują" ich autorzy.

The stereotypes exist in every language and in every culture. Many eminent scholars such as, for example, Walter Lippmann, Adam Schaff, Uta Quasthoff, Hilary Putnam, Jerzy Bartmiński conducted research on the nature and functions stereotypes, naming the factors which affect their stability. The theoretical part of the thesis presents the results of this research. It also reports how Poles, on the average, are seen by their neighbors, Ukrainians, Germans and Czechs (ethnic/national stereotypes) and how they perceive themselves (autostereotype). The function of a language course books is not only to help learners to master the language but also to familiarize them with people speaking it, their culture and reality. The presentation is, obviously, prone to be stereotypical. It should however strengthen the positive picture of a given nation and its culture so as to attract learners. The thesis shows what kind of stereotypes can be found in Polish language textbooks for the Breakthrough Level (A1) published after year 2000 and what picture of Poles and Poland “paint” their authors.
