Comparison of the concept of center and periphery in terms of Fernand Braudel and Immanuel Wallerstein.

Work addresses the problem of center and periphery in the theory of the French historian Fernand Braudel and American sociologist Immanuel Wallerstein. The division of the center and periphery was treated as a chief organizing principle of complex historical entities. The main objective of this thesis was to reconstruct how both scholars understood notions of center and periphery, as well as to characterize the relationship between elements of the system resulting from the center - periphery division. The work ends with comparison of the differences and similarities between Braudel’s and Wallerstein’s approach. Reflections on the above issues was preceded by an outline of an intellectual biography of Fernand Braudel and Immanuel Wallerstein, containing the most important biographical information, as well as the characteristics of the relevant theoretical ideas and their sources of inspiration. The main goal of this part of the thesis was to introduce the reader to main problem of this work and facilitate full understanding of the concept of center and periphery.

Praca podejmuje problem centrum i peryferii w teorii francuskiego historyka Fernanda Braudela i amerykańskiego socjologa Immanuela Wallersteina. Podział na centrum i peryferie został potraktowany jako naczelna zasada organizująca strukturę złożonych całości historycznych. Głównym celem jaki autor postawił przed sobą było dokładne zrekonstruowanie sposobu w jaki obaj uczeni rozumieli powyższe pojęcia, a także scharakteryzowanie jakie relacje łączą elementy systemu powstałe w wyniku podziału na centrum i peryferie. Pracę podsumowuje porównanie obu ujęć koncepcji centrum i peryferii. Rozważania nad powyższą problematyką poprzedza zarys biografii intelektualnej Fernanda Braudela oraz Immanuela Wallersteina zawierający najważniejsze informacje biograficzne, a także charakterystykę istotnych pomysłów teoretycznych oraz źródeł ich inspiracji. Ma on charakter wprowadzenia ułatwiającego Czytelnikowi pełne zrozumienie koncepcji centrum i peryferii oraz umiejscowienie jej w całokształcie teorii obu uczonych.
