The Maritime and Colonial League was asocial organization which popularized colonial ideas in interwar Poland. Perceived as a suitable area for future Polish settlement,the continent of Africa along withits inhabitants played a significant role as a matter of interest for Polish colonial activists. Many interesting descriptions regarding the indigenous people of Africawerepublish ed in the League's periodicals, such as "The Sea" and "Maritime and Colonial Issues", as well as in travellers' reports. Together they formed a distinct image affected by a feeling of superiority which originated from the eurocentric approach of the authors. The Africans were depicted as lazy savages living close to nature and driven by instincts. Such characteristics were believed to be typical of "primitive" peoples. They also confirmed that Polish authors themselves fully identified themselves with the colonial point of view on the non-European communities.
