Types of documents

The next step after choosing the right collection is to determine the type and subtyp e of the document described.
The appropriate term should be chosen from the following:

BOOK - a compact document, as opposed to a journal (also in the case of brochures, smaller than 2 publisher’s sheets in volume). The appropriate term (document subtype) should be chosen for the book type of document to indicate that it is: 

  • monograph 
  • atlas, map
  • catalogue 
  • post-conference publication 
  • report 
  • other publications 
  • dictionary, encyclopedia

  • standard

ARTICLE (BOOK CHAPTER) - a separate part of a book, constituting a compact compositional entity, often also in terms of content, with (or without) the word „chapter”, an own title or consecutive number, and sometimes with all these elements. For this type of document, an appropriate term should be chosen (a subtype of document) indicating that it is:

  • article 
  • bibliography 
  • critical edition of literary texts
  • review article
  • source text edition
  • catalogue 
  • post-conference publication
  • atlas, map
  • preface 
  • dictionary, encyclopedia
  • report 
  • afterword 
  • review 
  • manual 
  • other publications
  • review essay

JOURNAL - periodical publication, this type of document  is assigned to all publications of a serial character (including yearbooks, which have a much larger volume than other serial publications). A description for the entire year should be introduced, the names of the editor-in-chief and all scientific editors should be given, and the volumes and numbers published in a given year should be specified. If individual issues of the journal have a separate title or other important identification data, this information can be provided in the comments box.

PATENTS AND STANDARDS - this type of documents  includes description of inventions, proprietary designs and standards. You should choose an appropriate term (document subtype) to indicate that it is:

  • patent
  • utility design
  • integrated circuit topography
  • patent application
  • industrial design
  • trademark
  • standard
   

  

AUDIOVISUAL DOCUMENTS - documents containing recorded sound and images. For this type of document, select the appropriate term (document subtype) to indicate that it is:

  • sound record
  • film footage
 

 

BORN-DIGITAL MATERIALS - hitherto not formally published. A suitable term (document subtype) should be selected for this type of document to indicate that it is: 

  • no subtype
  • course
  • atlas, map
  • report
  •  article
 

 

PH.D. DISSERTATION, DIPLOMA THESIS - this type of document should be selected when creating a bibliographic description for an unpublished doctoral or diploma thesis.
