The article presents an analysis of the influence of religion on American policy toward Israel, concentrating on a specific set of beliefs known as Christian Zionism. Although it is commonly thought that Christian Zionism is a new phenomenon, strictly connected with the views represented by the American Christian Right, the author of this article agrees with scholars who stress that in fact it was theologically influential long before the creation of the movement. Additionally, the examples presented in the article demonstrate that Christian Zionism influenced not only American theological thought but also (to a certain degree) American policy - first toward the territory of Palestine, and later toward the state of Israel. Christian Zionists (representing both, premillennial and postmillennial approaches) created various effective lobbying organizations in order to pressure the US government. Therefore, the hypothesis of the text concerns the possibility of using FPA for the analysis of their influence on the US foreign policy decision-making process. It seems that the impact of (this specific form of) religion on American policy toward Palestine/Israel - at least since the early 20th century - can be analyzed through such FPA models that take into consideration pressure groups’ influence on the foreign policy decision-making process.
