dc.abstract.en The drama of the passengers of the Struma belongs to the most tragic events in the history of illegal emigration of Jews to Palestine, a mandated territory of Great Britain. The ship set sail from Constanta on 12 December 1941 carrying approximately 790 Jewish refugees, mostly Romanian citizens. The transport was arranged by Greek businessman Jean Pandelis and Romanian Revisionist Zionist organization. It was believed that after reaching Turkey British mandated authorities would give permission to the admittance of Jews to Palestine. But that did not happen and the Struma remained in port in Istanbul for 71 days. Finally, on 23 February 1942 Turkish authorities, having no intention of granting political asylum to the refugees, towed the ship back to the Black Sea. Next day there was a huge explosion and the Struma sank. Only one person was rescued. Over the years the cause of the tragedy provoked speculation. It seems no doubt that that ship was torpedoed by the Soviet ShCh-213 submarine. The drama of the passengers of the Struma exposed callousness and hypocrisy of many governments (particularly British, Turkish and Romanian), since at that time the facts about the extermination of Jews in Europe occupied by the Third Reich were already known. pl
