The paper has presented various exogenous functions of the Rzeszów city as a center of higher level service, regional and national importance in the fields of higher education and science, culture, specialist healthcare; road-, rail-, and air transport and also other elements of technical infrastructure. Reinforcement of the mentioned exogenous functions of the Rzeszów city as a metropolis and Europolis depends on appearance of external and internal opportunities for development of the city.
The external ones result from the hypothesis of sustainable development and from ability to use the structural funds of the European Union, whereas internal opportunities are connected with development “from the bottom upwards” with the use of hard and soft factors. The paper has also presented the networking character of innovation and interaction as factors influencing on the competitive advantage of metropolitan areas.
