The article aims to discuss the topic of “gestural phraseology” and to present the preliminary results of “gestural idioms’” using cognitive linguistics’ tools. I want to show how nonverbal behavior, and in particular the gestures that accompany speech, modify the meaning of these phraseological constructions. The analysis of gestural idioms allows to distinguish several different relations that occur between nonverbal behavior and its linguistic description, fixed in phraseological constructions. Describing these relationships enables a broader view of the semantics of phraseological units and is moving towards understanding meaning as a result of multimodal communication. To present them I will also use the collected audiovisual material which allowed to observe the use of idioms in the dialogue and the relationships that exist between two modalities making up the multisensory message.
