Among other Latin American countries, Brazil is unique in many different ways. Considering its territory, it is a regional giant. Brazil’s economy and development are an example to follow for many neighboring countries. Its culture is based on Portuguese heritage, on the contrary to the rest of the Hispanic Latin American world. Brazil has also had a different view on race issues. Starting from the first miscegenations, through the pinturas de castas,until now, Brazilians have been trying to describe properly the color of their skin. The article describes basic historical and contemporary issues connected with a race problem, that has still been vivid among members of Brazilian society.
