Field studies on the distribution, based on the ATPOL database, and taxonomic structure of the populations of Aconitum moldavicum on the Małopolska Upland were carried out in 2006-2008. In total, 651 specimens from 13 localities were critically evaluated. The species
in the area under study consists of two infraspecific taxa: subsp. moldavicum Hacq. and subsp. hosteanum (Schur) Ascherson & Graebner, and of intermediate, presumably hybridogenous forms,
which constituted 67% of the total taxonomic composition. This invokes a question on the historical-geographic background of such a pattern. A hypothesis on the "northern cryptic refugia" was envisioned based on the palaeobotanical data and knowledge on the species distribution (MITKA
2008). It seems that A. moldavicum could have persisted the last pleniglacial in the putative near Carpathian refugia, e.g. in the Pieniny Mts. Additionally, a threat to the species was evaluated.
