Travel to the Inside of Vienna. Essays (1991) is a book written by the Austrian author Gerhard Roth. It describes some uncommon and strange places in the capital of Austria, for example the cellars in Vienna’s first district, the psychiatric clinic in Gugging, the Tower of Fools and the former Jewish quarter Leopoldstadt. All those places aren’t well
known, but they have great significance for the history of Vienna. In my article I provide
analysis of Roth’s essays in terms of Michel Foucault’s theory of h
eterotopy. I also refer
to other theories of the French philosopher.
