abstract in English:
Both in the poetry of Bolesław Leśmian and in the poems of Sylvia Plath, narcissistic
representations played an important role - representations of this type
are related to the Narcissus’ myth, and display split subject refl ected in a mirror,
shadow or other refl ection. Many times, in the texts of the selected authors such
a twin character appears to be a woman looking for her identity in order to lose
herself in a process of differentiation and repetition. Representations of this sort
are present in Leśmian’s Dziewczyna przed zwierciadłem (The Girl Before a Mirror)
and Plath’s Mirror. The poems may be read together since they form a specific
dialogue of diff erent creative personalities, of diff erent outlooks, diff erent poetics,
finally - of opposite genders, on the same topic: self-cognition by means
of a mirror. The first of the lyrics written by a man is an apostrophe in which
a girl addresses a mirror, the second one written by a woman is a prosopopoeia,
a monologue of the mirror in which the feminine figure is refl ected. What is the
purpose of using these rhetorical means? What representations do they create?
What follows from comparison of the representations? What characterizes the
feminine identity by Leśmian, and what does, as Plath envisages? The paper attempts
to find answers to these questions.
