abstract in English:
The paper presents two examples of a relatively conventional transformation
of the mythological story of Narcissus included in two Spanish Baroque plays: in
a comedy The Bashful Man at Court by Tirso de Molina and the Calderon’s drama
Echo and Narcissus. Comparing the two transformations of the Narcissus theme
to the Shakespeare’s way of presenting behavioral elements of self-fascination in
some of the characters whom he created, the author concentrates on Cervantes’
work, analyzing the original and novel construction: a hero - Narcissus and an
anti-Narcissus - the narrator. Chivalric books which Don Kichote delighted in
reading are a mirror in which the hero saw his own refl ection as a paragon of
knight-errant and with which he fell in love. Cervantes not only exposes it to
view, but also administers an antidote for the narcissistic disease of self-fascination,
being irony contained in his narrative strategy. Cervantes is juxtaposed
in this role with Shakespeare in his relation to Prosper in The Tempest and with
Borges in some of his stories.
