Starting with an analysis of a poem by Seweryn Goszczyński Planting roses,
and presenting biographic circumstances of its creation, the author of this essay
asks a question whether, apart from any poet’s biography, his personal features
may also be discussed and in what manner: by studying his ideas, comparing his
writings and contextual ones, or perhaps in any other way?
Another problem concerns a possible way of understanding optimism;
naturally connected with the idea of a long-lasting duration, applicable not only
to nature, but also to history and to individual life. The author treats it as an
important romantic idea, present in literature mainly as a theme of memor y
and/or personal salvation. Optimism is usually not considered as typical for
the Romanticism; the author looks for its presence in poetical works by Novalis,
Wordsworth and Mickiewicz, to get to the conclusion that Romantic optimism
has personalistic character, resulting from the Romantic anthropology.
The author reconsiders also the question of the historical - philosophical -
national - literary context of the optimism versus its personal, characterological
roots and declares that Romantic optimism (idea) may be perceived also in poets’
personal features such as perseverance, belief in man and in reality, etc., becoming
sources of practical and literary optimism.
Starting with a short poem by Wordsworth, the author comes to the conclusion
that there may be a question not only of a philosophical but also of a "somatic"
optimism - a simple joyful reaction at the reality. She believes that some
ideas may be considered not only in philosophical and literary contexts, but also
in their personal, biographic ones. In conclusion, she underlines that a reaction
at the same stimulus may differ among various authors depending on their characters,
as it happens also in case of a critic. |
