abstract in English:
The objective of the article is the reconstruction of the perception of EUROPE,
which has been shaped in the awareness of contemporary users of the Croatian
language, as well as the attempt to depict the ideological pro1les differentiating the
concept. The methodological are the assumptions undertaken within the frames
of the EUROJOS project, whose aim is the comparative analysis of selected notions
across a range of languages (Slavonic and non-Slavonic). In the initial part of the
article, the author presents historical and cultural conditions associated with the
valuation of Europe and of the opposing Balkans, in the second part – the results of
the lexicographic research performed, in the third one – the results of the contextual
research conducted (the analysis of the most vital public discourses in progress),
and in the fourth one – the results of the questionnaire data (conducted among the
students of the three Zagreb universities). Towards the end of the article one can
encounter the reconstruction of the cognitive de1nition of EUROPE in the Croatian
language. In its light (real) EUROPE is set against THE BALKANS: Croatia considers
itself a part of EUROPE, but does not classify the nations referred to as THE BALKANS
as belonging to EUROPE. The means by which Croatia distinguishes itself from THE
BALKANS is also the maintenance of the concept of its belonging to South-Eastern
Europe.
