Artykuł omawia polityczną rolę gapia, czyli fr. badaud, we francuskiej literaturze XIX wieku. |

This paper examines the political role of the "curious onlooker" - or "badaud" - in the French literature of the nineteenth century. The badaud has been variously described as a person looking with wonder and astonishment, a gossipy or credulous idler, a citizen given to idle observation of everything. In spite of the fact that this social figure is not politically engaged, we shall show that it is somehow involved in the many riots and in- surrections that upset Paris between 1789 French Revolution and 1870 Third Republic. To describe and analyze the modality of this involvement, we shall examine and com- pare three works belonging to three different literary genres: Physiologie du flaneur by Louis Huart (1841), Les misérables by Victor Hugo (1862), and Psychologie des foules by Gustave Le Bon (1895). |
