There are some medieval Latin epitaph poems devoted to Peter Abelards memory.
The aim of this paper is to analyse six of them which were published in
the 19th century in Mignes Patrologia Latina, vol. 178 (one of the authors is Peter the Venerable). The texts display a variety of funeral commonplaces, figures
of speech, puns and often some sophisticated and intricate verse forms.
We get an interesting image of the mentality and views of the age. Quoting,
translating into Polish and interpreting these poems, the author tries to read
them with particular notice for the light they throw on the ideal of the scholar,
which, in this period, seemed inseparable from the ars bene vivendi.
