"Deaf Draft : Manifestos of Central European Avant-gardes : An Anthology" contains an exquisite selection of the essential manifestos, essays and artists’ statements created in the space of Central European avant-gardes. The book reveals the highlights of the region’s most influential artistic movements, like Czech Poetism and Artificialism, Serbian Zenitism and Hipnism, Romanian Integralism, or, finally, Surrealism, developing in an intensive way outside its French fatherland. The Authors present and analyse texts created in Bucharest, Prague, Bratislava, Zagreb or Belgrade from 1920s to the late 1940s in order to observe the main trajectories of the artistic evolution of the avant-garde theories. Being the crucial result of the Ministry of Science and Higher Education NPRH Research Programme, entitled Central- and East European Avant-Garde – Innovation or Imitation? created by the young literary theoreticians and critics at the Jagiellonian University in Krakow, the anthology has an innovative and multifarious character. It redefines the West-centric geopoetics of the avant-garde and recovers the original aesthetic and ideological concepts created in Central Europe. What is also important, the majority of the documents in the book is translated into Polish for the first time, bringing back into circulation a series of literary inspiring texts, oscillating between a scientific dissertation and a dada joke.
