Tekst prezentuje stanowisko amerykańskiego filozofa edukacji Daniela DeNicoli na temat edukacji liberalnej, wyłożone w jego książce z 2012 pt. „Learning to Flourish. A Philosophical Exploration of Liberal Education”. Opisuje on w niej edukację realizowaną w amerykańskich college’ach liberal arts lub równolegle ze specjalistycznymi studiami w danej dyscyplinie wiedzy. Analizując paradygmaty, w których tworzyła się, rozpisana na długie wieki i niejednorodna, tradycja edukacji liberalnej, od transmisji kultury po kompetencje w uczeniu się, DeNicola argumentuje, że żaden z paradygmatów nie stracił do dziś na ważności. Budując wąską (a nie pełną) ale normatywną teorię edukacji liberalnej, umożliwiającą dobre (tu: kwitnące) życie, przekonuje, że można te paradygmaty stale przywoływać i z ich pomocą na nowo odbudowywać sens tej edukacji. Jej aksjologiczne wyróżniki stanowią: wolność, autonomia, demokracja i prawda. Propozycja DeNicoli warta jest przywołania na polskim gruncie, na którym odpowiednikiem edukacji liberalnej jest kształcenie ogólne. Głównym celem tekstu jest wzmocnienie filozoficznej argumentacji na rzecz kształcenia ogólnego w sensie zbliżonym do liberalnego a wraz z tym odnowy myślenia o edukacji, czyli filozoficzne wzmocnienie dydaktyki.

The text presents thoughts of American philosopher of education Daniel R. DeNicola on liberal education contained in his book under the title „Learning to Flourish. A Philosophical Exploration of Liberal Education”, published in 2012. He describes in it education realised in American Liberal Arts Colleges. Analising paradigms in which liberal education developed and created its long and differentiated tradition, starting from the transmission of culture up to the skills of learning, DeNicola argues that none of them lost their validity. Building the thin (not the thick) normative theory of liberal education aimed at the flourishing life, he states, that we can still recall them all and rebuild the sense of that education. Its axiological distinctive features are freedom, autonomy, democracy and truth. DeNicola’s proposition is worth of discussing in Polish pedagogy where the privalent equivalent of liberal education is general education. The main aims of the text are to strengthen the philosophical argument in favor to understand general education more linked to liberal education because of its liberal elements, consequently to renew the sense of education as a whole and finally to strenghten didactics philosophically.
