The role of the manager of an healthcare organization is particular but also difficult due to work environment, internal and external surroundings of healthcare. The manager faces challenges posed by taxpayers, patients and medical personnel. The article presents theoretical considerations of the potentially (un)grateful character of the manager’s role in polish healthcare organizations. Based on the analysis of literature and existing research it discusses numerous requirements and expectation towards the manager in the context of contemporarily dominant trends in management. The main aim of this paper is to answer the question if the manager of polish healthcare organization should be more of a director or a leader; or maybe should be able to combine both of these roles.
