Książka koncentruje się wokół problematyki konstruowania płci przez religię. Jej głównym celem jest rekonstrukcja obrazu kobiety, jaki wyłania się z nauczania Kościoła rzymskokatolickiego oraz obrazu kobiety funkcjonującego w świadomości księży katolickich. Zaproponowane w książce ujęcie problematyki płci i religii koncentruje się na instytucji. Przedmiotem analizy jest z jednej strony posoborowe nauczanie Kościoła rzymskokatolickiego, z drugiej zaś konstrukcje płci funkcjonujące w świadomości przedstawicieli tej instytucji - księży rzymskokatolickich. Analiza nauczania opiera się przede wszystkim na dokumentach Kościoła powszechnego różnej rangi ogłoszonych w okresie od Soboru Watykańskiego II do 2005 r., czyli do końca pontyfikatu Jana Pawła II. Część pracy poświęcona obrazowi kobiety w świadomości księży oparta została na wynikach badań jakościowych (wywiady pogłębione) przeprowadzonych wśród księży diecezjalnych Archidiecezji Krakowskiej (38 rozmówców). Przeprowadzone badania pokazują, że funkcjonujące w nauczaniu Kościoła i świadomości księży obrazy kobiety/kobiecości są w dużej mierze kompatybilne (z wyjątkiem kwestii odnoszących się do udziału kobiet w liturgii) i opierają się na naturalistycznym, ahistorycznym, esencjonalistycznym, binarnym i komplementarnym ujmowaniu płci. Konstrukcje te znajdują swoje przedłużenie w postrzeganiu kobiecej i męskiej działalności zarówno w sferze prywatnej, jaki i publicznej, religijnej i świeckiej. Prowadzone badania pozwalają na postawienie tezy o androcentryczności i matrocentryczności obrazu kobiety oraz towarzyszącej jej niesamodzielności pojęcia kobieta. Równie istotne jest wskazanie na potrójne zamediowanie obrazu kobiety funkcjonującego w nauczaniu Kościoła i świadomości księży (kobieta mediowana przez męską obecność, przez macierzyństwo, kobieta, która mediuje) oraz na rozbieżność tworzonego przez Kościół obrazu kobiety z ponowoczesnym postrzeganiem ról płciowych i tożsamości kobiet.

"The Second. The Image of Women in the Teaching of the Roman Catholic Church and in the Perceptions of Priests". This book concentrates on how gender is constructed by religion. Its objective is to reconstruct the image of the woman that emerges from the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church and the perceptions of women among Roman Catholic priests. The perception of gender and religion in this book is focused on an institution. The objects of the analysis are the post-Vatican II teaching of the Roman Catholic Church as well as the perceptions of women/womanhood among Catholic priests who represent the institution of the Church. The analysis of the Roman Catholic Church’s teaching is based on Rome’s documents of varying significance published between the Second Vatican Council and 2005 (the end of John Paul II’s papacy). The empirical part of the book refers to qualitative research (in-depth interviews) conducted among diocesan priests of the Archdiocese of Krakow (38 respondents). As far as the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church is concerned, content analysis was used. The empirical research was influenced by grounded theory, perceived more as a broad methodological perspective than a narrow procedure. The research reveals that the images present in the Roman Catholic Church and those shared by the priests coincide (excluding issues concerning participation in the liturgy), as they are based on a naturalistic, ahistorical, essentialist, binary and complementary concept of gender. This construct results in the perception of activity of women and men in the public/private and religious/lay spheres. The research leads to a thesis about androcentrism and “mother-centrism” in the image of a woman, as well as about the dependency of the "woman" category. The image of woman in the teaching of the Roman Catholic Church and as perceived by the priests is mediated in a triple way (woman mediated by a man’s presence, by maternity, and woman as mediator). Furthermore, it does not correspond with the construction of postmodern gender roles, nor with the contemporary perception of women’s identity.
