dc.abstract.en Poland’s energy policy is determined by: a relatively high energy self-reliance indicator based on substantial resources of coal, dependence on the import of fossil fuels, especially natural gas from Russia, and German-Russian cooperation in the area of energy in the Baltic Sea region and the rigorous EU climate policy towards high CO2 emissions in the generation of electricity. The article presents conditioning factors and assumptions of Poland’s energy policy and consequences of the process of decarbonisation which requires a drastic reduction in the participation of coal in the national energy balance. Poland’s energy policy requires a deep transformation consisting in a departure from the monopoly of coal in the electric power generation and diversification of energy sources by increasing the role of renewable energy (wind, bio-fuels, geothermal energy) and constructing the first nuclear power plant. An increased share of renewable energy will serve to decrease the use of primary energy from fossil fuels and will also serve to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Increasing the energy efficiency is another important goal. pl
