Autobiography as testimony. The Concentration Camp experience in "Pięć lat kacetu" by Stanisław Grzesiuk

Niniejsza praca ma na celu analizę autobiograficznych wspomnień Stanisława Grzesiuka Pięć lat kacetu. Badania nad drugą częścią wspomnieniowej trylogii warszawskiego barda podzieliłem na dwa istotne bloki tematyczne: autobiografizm i świadek. Analizę rozpoczynam od teoretycznego ujęcia składowych pojęć. Następnie przechodzę do interpretacji poszczególnych fragmentów Pięciu lat w zaproponowanym przeze mnie kluczu. W pierwszym bloku analizuję postawę narratora jako opowiadającego własną historię. Wskazuję również na liczne gry z konwencją oraz techniki autokreacji głównego bohatera. Poddaję pod dyskusję kwestie związane ze szczególnym rodzajem języka autobiograficznego, jakim jest język autobiografii lagrowej. W kolejnym bloku - dotyczącym postawy świadka - wskazuję na to, że Grzesiuk wypowiada się jako świadek lagru i wspólnoty mężczyzn. Co istotne, podzieliłem badania nad świadkiem na dwa podrozdziały: o świadku wspólnoty rozproszonej oraz świadku inności. W swoich analizach opieram się na współczesnych definicjach pojęcia autobiografia i świadek (studia nad postpamięcią). Dodatkowo interpretuję prozę Grzesiuka w kontekście badań nad męskościami oraz men’s studies.

This thesis aims to analyse the autobiographical memoirs of Stanisław Grzesiuk in the text Pięć lat kacetu. I have divided the research on the second part of the Warsaw bard's memoir trilogy into two important thematic blocks: autobiography and witness. I begin my analysis with a theoretical account of the constituent concepts. I then proceed to interpret the individual fragments of Pięć lat kacetu in the key I have proposed. In the first block, I analyse the attitude of the narrator as telling his own story. I also point out the numerous games with conventions and styles of self-creation of the main character. I introduce into the discussion issues related to a particular type of autobiographical language, that of the lager autobiography language Another is a block on the attitude of the witness. I point out how Grzesiuk fulfils himself as a witness to the lag and the community of men. Significantly, I have divided the research on the witness into two subsections: the witness of the dispersed community and the witness of otherness. In my analyses, I rely on contemporary definitions of the terms autobiography and witness. Importantly, I consider Grzesiuk’s prose in the context of masculinities and men's studies.
