The article presents a great role of perception in creating folk botanical lexis. The analysis has been developed on the basis of the material collected in the villages located in Podhale region. All the gathered folk plant names belong to seven groups categorised on the basis of such properties as colour, form, smell, quality, sound and motion. Category membership of the examined lexical items was decided on the basis of a secondary semantic motivation of names (folk etymology). The analysis indicates that cognition through senses has a great influence on the nomination process and folk phytonyms reflect categorization, conceptualization as well as valuation of elements of the real world.
