W chwili objęcia przez Karola Estreichera Starszego, stanowiska dyrektora Biblioteki Jagiellońskiej, personel biblioteczny stanowili czterej pracownicy i dwóch woźnych. Z czasem liczba etatów dla pracowników bibliotekarskich wzrosła do sześciu, ale przy ambitnych planach nowego dyrektora była to nadal niewystarczająca liczba zatrudnionych do tworzenia zbiorów mających być podstawą biblioteki narodowej. Estreicher znalazł na to sposób pozyskując dla biblioteki wolontariuszy, wśród których byli studenci, profesorowie i asystenci Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego, ale też profesorowie gimnazjalni i liczni znajomi bibliografa. Dzięki ich pracy uporządkowano większość zbiorów i skatalogowano tysiące woluminów.

At the time when Karol Estreicher, Sr, took the position of the director of the Jagiellonian Library, the library staff consisted of four employees and two janitors. With time, the number of posts for the library staff librarian increased to six, but with ambitious plans of the new director the Library was still understaffed for the planned collections which were to be basis for a national library. Estreicher found solution by acquiring volunteers, among whom were students, professors and assistants at the Jagiellonian University, and also grammar school professors and numerous friends of the bibliographer. Through their work, most collections were organised and thousands of volumes were catalogued.
