dc.abstract.en The notion of liberal man presented in this paper is based on the works of John Rawls and other well-known contemporary philosophers who are infl uenced by his thought. Although Rawlsian liberalism remains close to the social democratic tradition, his political theory is greatly indebted to Thomas Hobbes. In Lectures on the History of Political Philosophy Rawls focuses on the Hobbesian notion of human nature and interprets it as a rational construct on which his theory of the State is based. Similarly, Rawls attempts to ground his own political philosophy on a political conception of the person, which is adopted to fit the idea of society as a fair system of cooperation and serves the purpose of justifying the normative model of the State. This conception was criticized by other liberals like Robert Nozick, by public choice scholars, and by communitarians. However, in contemporary liberal thought there also exist more empirical conceptions, especially those created within the public choice school of thought. They are related to the classical liberal tradition through the emphasis they put on the freedom of the individual, which manifests itself in public or collective choices and can be fulfilled within the political framework of a liberal democratic State. All these theories are constructivist, hence we can say that the liberal concepts of man present general models rather than full descriptions of human nature. pl
