Celem pracy jest przedstawienie sposobu, w jaki filmowa twórczość Wanga Xiaoshuaia portretuje młodych bohaterów, dorastających w zmieniającej się chińskiej rzeczywistości. Poprzez przybliżenie kontekstów politycznych i społecznych, związanych z historią drugiej połowy XX wieku w Chinach, zauważalne stają się zjawiska, które kształtowały pokolenia młodych osób i realia dorastania w Państwie Środka. Znajdują one swoją reprezentację w tak zwanym kinie Szóstej Generacji, której przedstawicielem jest Wang Xiaoshuai. Pierwszy rozdział pracy skupia się na charakterystyce fenomenu Szóstej Generacji w kontekście poprzedzającej ją Piątej Generacji oraz na przedstawieniu głównych inspiracji reżyserów i wątków tematycznych, jakie podejmują twórcy tego bardzo zróżnicowanego nurtu. Zostaje także przybliżone, w jaki sposób młodzi bohaterowie byli przedstawiani w kinie chińskim, przed narodzeniem Szóstej Generacji. Spojrzenie na filmografię Wanga przez pryzmat przemian zachodzących w Chinach pozwala dostrzec, że przedstawianie problemów młodych bohaterów, dorastających na ich tle, jest powtarzającym się motywem jego twórczości. Reżyser prezentuje portrety postaci w okresie młodości oraz dojrzewania i ukazuje problemy, z jakimi muszą się mierzyć – na charakterystyce młodych bohaterów w twórczości reżysera skupia się drugi rozdział pracy.

The aim of the study is to present how Wang Xiaoshuai’s cinema portrays young characters, who grow up in the changing Chinese reality. By presenting the political and social contexts, related to the history of the second half of the 20th century in China, it is possible to notice the events that shaped the generations of young people and the realities of adolescence in mainland China. Those aspects are visible in the Sixth Generation’s cinema, represented by Wang Xiaoshuai. The first chapter of the thesis focuses on the characteristics of the phenomenon of the Sixth Generation in the context of the Fifth Generation and on the presentation of main inspirations for the directors and thematic threads undertaken by the creators of this very diverse trend. It also introduces how the young heroes were portrayed in Chinese cinema, preceding the birth of the Sixth Generation. A look at Wang’s filmography through the prism of changes taking place in China, shows that presenting problems of young heroes, growing up against them, is a recurring theme in Wang’s work. The directors presents portrait of characters in the period of youth and adolescence, and shows the problems they have to face – the characteristics of young heroes in the director’s filmography are presented in the second chapter of the work.
