abstract in English:
Mercy is the love responding to human weaknesses and misery. It is the highest attribute of God. As a consequence, mercy should also be the source and the model for man’s actions. Human being is divinely-called to perform acts of mercy for his fellow creatures in a variety of ways. Helping young girls who due to their immoral or unlawful conduct were placed in reformatories is one of them. The article focuses on the activities of the St. Faustina Reformatory Institution for the Youth (Młodzieżowy Ośrodek Wychowawczy im. św. s. Faustyny) in Kraków. The reformatory is run by the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy and its social rehabilitation program is derived from the charism of the congregation, i.e. on the response to the Divine Mercy. The social rehabilitation model in the reformatory is based on the integral view on human being and refers to every sphere of his live (physical, intellectual, emotional, social and spiritual). In the process of rehabilitation it is important for the girls to be motivated to analyse the roots of their previous behavior and to start working on their most crucial problems. Although the separation from the outer negative influences may be subjectively experienced as a difficult procedure, it is nonetheless appreciated by the wards as a necessary therapeutic means. The therapeutic and diagnostic process together with the corrective measures taken in the group play a crucial role in social rehabilitation. The girls are encouraged to perform the acts of mercy for other people, both for the other wards and for the people from the outside of the reformatory. The wards’ parents are included in the rehabilitation process by regular meetings, psychological education and formation in the spirit of the Divine Mercy. At a particular stage the girls are able to consider their stay in the reformatory as a form of grace, as help received in accordance with the Divine Mercy. The forgiveness that they experience from themselves and from other people is a very tangible aspect of mercy. As a result of the spiritual formation, with the example of St. Faustina’s life and the care they are provided with in the reformatory many of the girls are able to recreate their relationship with God - the Father of Mercy.
