The main goal of the text is an attempt to analyze the changes of the nature of language and image in the context of new media development. The author focuses primarily on the relationship between language and image and its role in the modern culture. Referring to the reflections and thesis of numerous theorists (from Heidegger, Wittgenstein, Baudrillard to the modern theorists of media studies), she tries to determine how the digitization, the development of new technologies have changed the status of language and image – in terms of the their ontology, as well as their function of representing reality. One of the most important issue considered in the text is the referral and epistemological function of language and image. In this context, the author reflects on the core on a problem of “pictorial turn” , which was a response to the “linguistic turn”. Moreover she tries to consider the main assumption of linguistic and pictorial hegemony over the reality and examines the question of simulation (Baudrillard’s conception of the ‘simulacrum’). Taking into consideration the evolution of the nature of language and image, she refers to the categories of hybridity and inter- and hipermedium. Finally, this text sets some perspective of the development of the studies of language and image, which is connected with the turn to the new culture – the “third culture”, postulated by John Brockman.
