abstract in English: | Celtic legends (=myths) have survived to our times thanks to oral tradition. It is hard to say, when they were created. Their content is of great help here. Some of the oldest Irish legends belong to so called “Ulster Cycle”. They contain features characteristic for Celtic society from the late Iron Age (1st century BC). First Irish legends were written down in the 7th century AD, and most probable in the 8th century, however, those versions have not survived by our times. The oldest preserved texts come from manuscripts dated at the 11th century. In Ireland myths are still omnipresent and certainly they will be in the future, because numerous place names, names of rivers, lakes and other geographical characteristics originate in mythology. Belonging to cultural heritage of a community or more widely - nation, myths play an essential role sustaining culture of the community. They also can be referred to in order to find an analogy with personal experiences, and even reasons for contemporary political events. The workshop during The Bard Summer School - Exploring Celtic Myth is one of many initiatives in Ireland, that create space for such reflections. The organizers of The Bard Summer School are convinced that ancient myths contain motifs that are present in the life of the contemporary man, as well on the individual level (in the personal life), as on the national level (in politics). They perceive myth as a toolkit (Myth Toolkit), that helps to grasp the sense of: the wholeness of the modern world; changes that occur in the world; as well as challenges that have to be faced. Choosing appropriately selected individual and group’s tasks the organizers try to create atmosphere that enables the participants of the Summer School to “experience ancient myths”, and also to link them with the modern world. The workshop is based not on the question whether the myth is true, but whether it is useful. The Bard Summer School is the subject of analysis in this article. This analysis is based on materials received from the organisers of the Summer School, as well on the author’s experience obtained while helping with the organization of several Schools, as well participating in them. By doing this the author gives an example of presence of the Celtic myth in contemporary Ireland - one of the forms of cultural activities in Ireland that the myth has penetrated. |
