Planty in Krakow is a beautiful, historic park surrounded by cultural landscape of different ages. The origin of the park dated back to the 19th century. While under the Austrian regime in Krakow, the fortifications of the city were dismantled. In the time of the Free City of Krakow (1815-1846) the so-called Republic of Krakow, the work on the newly established park nad begun. The city regainedits autonomy in 1866, and Planty was then in full bloom. At the end of the 19th century, the park fulfilled a teaching as well as an integrating role, connecting the different nationalities living together in Krakow then. It was an important place for recreation and an elegant site of the city. As a result of the First, and the Second World War, Planty was destroyed and the park existed in ruin. In 1972 some creative works on the revalorization of Planty in its shape from 1900 were made. According to the project of Janusz Bogdanowski et al. the park was divided into eight so-called gardens : Wawel, Uniwersytet, Pałac Sztuki, Florianka, Barbakan, Dworzec, Gródek, and Atradom. In 1985 the reconstruction of the garden started. The metal fences with dustbins as well as benches andstreet lights were arranged. The paths were paved with granite and concrete cobblestones. Since 1990 the pedestals with directions wereput in places of former towers and gates. The work began in the garden of Wawel. Nowadays the whole park is revalorized, which fulfils an ecological, and a communication channel.Since last year, Planty has been the part of the cultural park of Old Town (Stare Miasto). It may again play its orginal role as a sitefor integration and education as well as forms a scenic walkway. For these reasons this very case study has been prepared.
