dc.abstract.en The article is an attempt to offer an overview of a specific “teratology of substance” in the novel The Man who Laughs by Victor Hugo. Some landscapes are an excuse for the analysis of the transformation of matter which, thanks to the dynamic strength of unification combines the opposed qualities. In Hugo’s novel, the idea of panvitalism accompanies a metaphysical reflection on the “universal substance” and the principles of the organisation of the universe. The resulting vision of the represented world, in fact, of the poetic world, as well as romantic humanism is analysed in the spirit of research on the imaginary: nature appears here as a space for an “anthropo-cosmic fight” (G. Bachelard) where, in the midst of powerful conflicting forces of nature, particularly noteworthy is “the power of particles” (G. Durand). pl
