The Canadian writer Margaret Atwood is an author who usually employs some kind of binary system in her works to present the lives of her protagonists. The narrative structure of the novel Cat’s Eye seems to be based on various kinds of oppositions, such as nature/civilisation, men/women, self/other, past/present. As the story unfolds, the boundaries between the seemingly separate elements prove to be dynamic and ambiguous. The dualistic pattern thus becomes deconstructed, making the novel an insightful account of reality which conveys the complexity of human experience.
