Tematem mojej pracy jest nauczanie języka angielskiego dzieci i młodzieży wyższych klas szkoły podstawowej za pomocą brytyjskiej literatury dziecięcej. Praca ta jest owocem doświadczenia pedagogicznego zdobytego podczas praktyki nauczycielskiej odbytej na ostatnim roku studiów licencjackich. W części teoretycznej starałam się udowodnić tezę, że wprowadzenie autentycznych źródeł języka obcego do użycia podczas zajęć szkolnych pomaga w przyswojeniu zarówno umiejętności receptywnych, jak i produktywnych. W dodatku utwory literackie z określonego kręgu kulturowego mogą być doskonałą bazą do tworzenia dramy, gier językowych, czy pisania kreatywnych wypracowań.Z kolei w części praktycznej umieściłam konspekty lekcji przeprowadzonych w klasie VI szkoły podstawowej na podstawie klasyków brytyjskiej literatury przeznaczonej dla młodego czytelnika: Piotrusia Pana J.M. Barriego oraz Charliego i fabryki czekolady autorstwa Roald’a Dahla. Lekcje autorskie spotkały się z życzliwym i entuzjastycznym przyjęciem ze strony uczniów, co było dla mnie dodatkową zachętą i potwierdzeniem dużego potencjału, literatury dziecięcej jako bazy dla zajęć językowych.Dodatki umieszczone na końcu pracy zawierają materiały przygotowane na podstawie wyżej wymienionych utworów i wykorzystane przeze mnie podczas zajęć z młodzieżą. Są one dowodem na to, że autentyczne źródła mogą stać się inspiracją do uatrakcyjnienia lekcji języka obcego. Wymaga to z pewnością dużego zaangażowania i wkładu pracy ze strony nauczyciela, jednak w szerszej perspektywie przynosi wymierne korzyści w postaci zwiększenia kompetencji językowych uczniów. Podsumowując, uważam, że nauczanie oparte na literaturze dziecięcej pomaga przełamać stereotypy na temat lekcji języka angielskiego jako polegających na mało twórczym rozwiązywaniu zadań gramatycznych. Nawet okazjonalne zetknięcie się z dorobkiem artystycznym autorów anglojęzycznych wprowadza do klasy atmosferę świeżości i stanowi bodziec do podjęcia przez uczniów prób samodzielnego czytania literatury w oryginale.

Anglo – Saxon literature plays a vital role in the world’s literary output. The most frequently read books are written in English which has already become a global language. It makes these literary works accessible to over 360 million of native speakers and countless English language learners worldwide. The foundation for this enormous cultural heritage was laid by British literature, having been created for about 1400 years. It is in Britain that the development of children’s literature was significantly noticeable which is of prior importance in the age of the dominance of the English language Introducing literature to the English language classroom would be highly beneficial, especially in the process of teaching teenagers. The period of adolescence usually brings about serious problems with self – acceptance and understanding of the surrounding world. Reading, also in a foreign language, would help youngsters overcome their emotional obstacles by means of “spiritual unloading (catharsis), escape from the daily routine; transferring problems or wishes on fictional characters and identification with the fortune of the others (empathy)” (Pawłowska, 2009:28). Magda Sroka adds that “literature, by means of evoking strong emotions, helps understand more about one’s life and environment including problems commonly associated with growing –up” (Sroka, 2009:193).Taking all above into account we have to realize the considerable potential of using authentic literary texts for EFT purposes. First of all, it can encourage students to get to know about history and culture of a particular country. The novel’s plot presents important facts, ideologies, attitudes and customs in everyday situations which help students subconsciously absorb foreign reality in an entertaining way. Not only does reading in a target language create a possibility to check one’s comprehension skills but it also contributes to the development of one’s vocabulary and grammatical structures by showing them in a context. Finally, literary texts can serve as a basis for unlimited language production stimulating exercises, like drama, comic drawing, language games etc. During my teaching practice in Primary School no 25 in Kraków I managed to observe how much elementary students can benefit from working with authentic literary pieces. The suspense while predicting what would happen later on in the novel, getting to know vocabulary pieces not easily encountered in other sources or creative writing on the basis of the plot really absorbed the learners. Such a reaction strengthened my belief in the effectiveness of language teaching through the use of literature. This project work consists of two sections: theoretical and practical one. In the theoretical section I will present the role of literature in FLT as well as its influence on the improvement of particular language skills. Views and attitudes towards the topic will be complemented by relevant quotations taken from specialist literature. The practical section includes the plans of English language lessons inspired by British children’s literature taught to 6th grade primary school students during my teaching practice. The main aim of the whole chain of project lessons was to encourage learners to place their interest in literature and to make them discover that they can improve their language command through extensive reading on their own. Hopefully, this project will make a contribution to the process of introducing more authentic language sources into an English language classroom.
