W mojej pracy zajęłam się tematem autostopu w okresie Polskiej Rzeczpospolitej Ludowej. Na początku zarysowałam historię autostopu na świecie. Następnie przeszłam do PRL-u – zrekonstruowałam moment narodzin tej formy podróży w Polsce i opisałam fenomen tzw. akcji książeczkowej. Przeanalizowałam teksty pochodzące zarówno z opisywanego przeze mnie okresu, jak i teksty współczesne go dotyczące (wspomnienia, dzienniki). Wyciągnęłam wnioski co do tego kto, gdzie i dlaczego jeździł autostopem, opisałam poszczególne elementy kultury ówczesnych autostopowiczów. W dalszej kolejności zajęłam się autostopem w kontekście politycznym i społecznym PRL. Skontrastowałam praktykę autostopu z turystyką zorganizowaną, przyjrzałam się kwestii zaufania w tamtym okresie. Następnie dokonałam analizy filmu Podróż za jeden uśmiech, zwracając uwagę na opisywane przeze mnie wcześniej zagadnienia. W ostatnim rozdziale przedstawiłam kondycję autostopu współcześnie i zamknęłam pracę wywiadem przeprowadzonym z kierowcami i autostopowiczami. Podstawowe pytania, jakie sobie w tej pracy zadawałam, to: na ile polityka władzy PRL przyczyniła się do tak silnego rozkwitu zjawiska autostopu? Czy jego historia wyglądałaby podobnie, gdyby nie miała miejsca akcja książeczkowa? Czy popularność autostopu współcześnie jest echem tamtych działań? Uważam, że tak; autostop był ucieczką od nieciekawej rzeczywistości PRL i odpowiedzią na ograniczającą wolność osobistą politykę władzy.

In my project I focused on the phenomenon of hitchhiking in the time of the People’s Republic of Poland. At the very beginning I outlined the world history of hitchhiking. Then I went forward to PRL (which is a polish abbreviation for the People’s Republic of Poland) – I reconstructed the historical moment in which hitchhiking in Poland begun, and I described the so-called „book campaign” (which should not be referred to literature). Then I looked at the texts about this period from both then and now (reminiscences, diaries). I drew conclusions regarding the questions: who? to where? and why? was hitchhiking, I characterised certain elements of the hitchhikers’ culture of that time. Thereafter I wrote about the political and social background of hitchhiking in PRL. I collated the custom of hitchhiking with the organised tourism policy (the expression „escorted tours” is not being used here on purpose). Then I took a closer look at the society confidence issues. Later on I analysed the movie called Podróż za jeden uśmiech having in mind all the questions mentioned before. In the last section I put forward the way of hitchhiking nowadays and I concluded the project with an interview with both drivers that pick up hitchhikers and hitchhikers themselves. The most important questions I was asking myself while writing this paper were: to what extent did the policy of PRL begot the boom of the hitchhiking culture in Poland? Would the history of hitchhiking in PRL be the same if it was not for the „book campaign”? Is the fact, that hitchhiking is so popular contemporarily, the echo of these action? In my opinion, it is; hitchhiking became an escape from the miserable reality of the communist country the people were living in, it was a response for the policy that was limiting their freedom.
