The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of cryotherapy as a series of treatment to alleviate the symptoms of the rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in female patients. The study comprised 40 women aged 21 to 60, representing various types and stages of rheumatoid arthritis. The questionnaire was aimed at personal data, type and stage of the disease, symptoms and functional impairment. Level of pain and morning stiffness were analyzed with use of VAS (Visual Analogue Scale). The circumference of selected joints and mobility ranges were measured. Two functional tests developed by the author were employed: kneeling test and stair climbing test. Studies were done before and after the 10 day therapeutic session. The patients were exposed to -160ºC for 3 minutes each time. The study after the 10 day therapy revealed several statistically significant findings: reduction of the feeling of the pain, morning stiffness, decrease of joints circumference, improvement of joints mobility. Own assessment of health improved markedly. 40% of patients were of the opinion that therapy was very effective, 45% - partially effective. Only 15% denied effectiveness of therapy. One can conclude that the cryotherapy is effective form of treatment of the rheumatoid arthritis and may positively affect the quality of life of patients.
