Praca podejmuje zagadnienia leżące dotychczas na peryferiach zainteresowań filologów, teatrologów i historyków. Autor stara się opisać wzajemne relacje świata sztuki oraz sfery aktywności obywatelskiej. Przytacza najważniejsze publikacje ostatnich lat badające wzajemny stosunek całej instytucji teatru i sfery życia polis. Autor poświęca dużo uwagi analizie dotychczasowych metodologii badania teatru oraz dyskusji naukowej na temat jego związków z życiem politycznym. Właściwą część pracy stanowi próba zbadania wzajemnych relacji sztuki i polityki poprzez analizę trzech głównych zagadnień: działalności aktorów, pozaartystycznych wydarzeń w gmachu teatru oraz zjawiska choregii. Rozdział poświęcony działalności publicznej aktorów opisuje zachowaną w źródłach aktywność około dwudziestu artystów takich jak Teodoros, Aristodemos, Neoptolemos i inni, usiłuje również opisać ich wkład w politykę Grecji epoki klasycznej. Przytoczone są liczne przykłady zaangażowania aktorów w działalność dyplomatyczną, uczestnictwo w poselstwach oraz przykłady przychylności władców, szczególnie macedońskich, wobec poszczególnych artystów. Druga badawcza część pracy opisuje pozaartystyczne wydarzenia odbywające się w gmachu teatru. Zaliczyć do nich należy: ofiary składane przez strategów podczas Wielkich Dionizjów, składanie danin przez państwa sojusznicze podczas tej samej uroczystości, parada synów poległych bohaterów, przyznanie nagrody wieńca dla osób zasłużonych dla polis, a także odbywające się w teatrze obrady Zgromadzenia Ludowego i innych gremiów obywatelskich. W tym też rozdziale opisany jest wygląd fizyczny i funkcjonowanie miejsc honorowych w teatrze – proedrii. Wszystkie te zagadnienia mają na celu zbadanie powiązań teatru ze strukturami państwowymi i analizę teatru jako miejsca funkcjonowania polis. Ostatni rozdział badawczy zatytułowany jest Choregia – zaszczyt czy ciężar? Podjęte tu rozważania mają na celu zbadanie sposobu postrzegania choregii przez Ateńczyków. Rozdział opisuje przypadki nie tylko traktowania tego świadczenia jako okazji do zdobycia popularności, ale też podejmuje zagadnienie dotychczas rzadko opisywane, mianowicie liczne przypadki pojmowania go przez obywateli jako uciążliwego wydatku. W rozdziałach badawczych autor koncentruje się przede wszystkim na badaniu źródeł antycznych, publikacje współczesne zajmują tutaj miejsce drugorzędne. Całość pracy podejmuje również zagadnienie występujących współcześnie trudności w rozumieniu teatru greckiego jako całości. Autor dochodzi do wniosku, że dla Greków epoki klasycznej teatr był zjawiskiem, które w równym stopniu dotykało sfery religijnej, artystycznej i obywatelskiej. Współczesna trudność z uświadomieniem sobie tego faktu jest przyczyną licznych nieporozumień oraz debat nad wyższością któregoś z wymienionych trzech aspektów.

The thesis focuses on issues which have laid on peripheries of interests among philologists, theatrologists and historians. Author attempts at describing mutual relations between the world of art and the area of citizens' activity; cites the most important works published in recent years regarding the mutual relations between whole institution of theatre and life in polis. Author pays a lot of attention to analysis of current methodology of theatrical studies and scholarly debate regarding its connections with political life. The main part of the thesis contains an attempt at study of mutual relations between the art and politics through analysis of three main issues: actors' activity, non-artistic events taking place in a theatre's edifice and the phenomenon of choregia. The chapter dedicated to public activity of actors, basing on saved sources, describes activity of about twenty artists such as Theodorus, Aristodemos, Neoptolemus and others. It also attempts at decribing their contribution to the politics of Classical Greece. Many examples of actors' involvement in dyplomatic activity and their participation in legations are cited. There are also cases of rulers', especially Macedonian, favour bestowed upon particular actors. Second part of the thesis describes non-artistic events taking place in a theatre's edifice. Among them there are included: sacrifices made by strategoi during Great Dionysia, tributes paid by the allied states during the same holiday, parade by sons of deceased heroes, granting the prize of wreath to persons distinguished for polis and debates of ekklesia and other civic institutions taking place in a theatre. This chapter also includes a description and way of functioning of the honorary places in a theatre – proedria. All these issues allow to study the connection between a theatre and national structures, as well as to analyze a theatre as a place of polis' functioning. The last chapter is titled Choregia – an honour or a burden? Deliberations in this chapter attempt at studying the way Athenians saw choregia. The chapter mentions not only the cases of utilizing this benefit in order to get popularity, but also picks up the rarely described issue of people seeing this service as a burdensome expence. In all the chapters the author focuses mostly on researching the ancient sources; modern publications have a secondary place. As a whole, the thesis explains the matter of complications in contemporary understanding of Greek theatre as a whole. Athor explains, that for Greeks in the Classical Era theatre was a phenomenon, which was connected in the same way with religious, artistic and civil areas of life. Modern problems with understanding of this fact is a reason for numerous misunderstandings and debates regarding one of the mentioned aspect superiority over the others.
