Polany reglowe, jako zbiorowiska seminaturalne, podlegają systematycznej sukcesji wtórnej w następstwie zaprzestania ich użytkowania. W polskich Karpatach proces ten szczególnie się nasilił w ostatnich dekadach, a powierzchnia polan uległa znacznej redukcji. Wkraczanie lasu na górskie polany niesie ze sobą wiele negatywnych skutków, powodując między innymi zmiany w strukturze oraz funkcjonowaniu środowiska. Poznanie dynamiki i mechanizmów tego procesu jest więc niezwykle istotne. Problematykę zarastania polan podejmują od wielu lat specjaliści z zakresu botaniki, ekologii, leśnictwa, geoekologii, GIS i teledetekcji oraz ochrony przyrody. Opracowania różnią się między sobą ze względu na skalę przestrzenną, zakres tematyczny i stosowane metody. Niniejszy artykuł stanowi przegląd badań dotyczących zarastania polan reglowych w polskich Karpatach.

Montane glades are a characteristic feature of the forested mountain landscape in the Polish Carpathians. Over the past few decades, however, an overall decrease in those semi-natural meadow areas has been observed. Gradual disappearance of glades may have many negative effects, including changes in the landscape structure and its functioning. Investigations of forest encroachment on montane glades have been carried out by specialists in the field of botany, ecology, forestry, geoecology, GIS and remote sensing, nature conservation. Studies may be classified according to their spatial extent, thematic scope and methods. Contemporary research focuses on changes in the areal extent of glades as well as species composition, age structure and spatial pattern of encroaching trees and shrubs. A considerably lesser amount of studies relates to factors affecting the dynamics of glades being overgrown. Nevertheless there is still no complex, interdisciplinary approach to the observed phenomenon as well as there are no comparative studies conducted in different mountain ranges. In order to gain better knowledge about the process of overgrowing – its dynamics and mechanisms, it is necessary to examine a large number of glades representing different environmental conditions.
