abstrakt w j. angielskim: | The previous analyses of movie adaptations of Batman contained and described the same exploratory theses: The Burton movies were described as grim and gothic, perfectly fitting the director’s style; those produced by Schumacher were criticized for destroying the image of a superhero and portraying him with a lot of kitschy aesthetics; Nolan, on the other hand, gained a lot of positive feedback for reviving Batman on the silver screen and for making a successful attempt of doing a realistic interpretation of comics. Umberto Eco and Slavoj Žižek have been postulating for years that people should focus on analysis of popcultural works. According to them, film and comics create a much better reflection of the society mood and deliver psychological, ideological, political processes, plus hidden dependences of the authorities and the society, than sophisticated art.Following the hints of these outstanding humanists the analysis of the movie adaptations of Batman comics from the years 1989-2008 was done. The author advances a thesis suggesting that the chosen films contain social-political references to the culture and history of the United States of America. Inspired by Siegfried Krakauer’s movie analysis, as much as the American method of ideological analysis and other theories, an attempt of unveiling the obscure contents, the vision of the American society, and its fait social was made. In the first chapter, Between a comic panel and a movie tape, the author introduces the history of the American comics till the moment of release of the first Batman comic book. An issue of the similarity between the languages of a movie and a comic book, the relationship between them, and mutual inspiration of both types of art was raised. Also, the process of adaptation and its difficulties was described, and the author proved that Batman is a part of today’s mythology of the American culture. The second chapter, The Dusk of Cold War and the Batman Returns, was divided into three subsections. In the first one the figure of the director – Tim Burton – was presented. His biography, artistic achievements, and style characteristics were shown. In the second one the analysis of his movie Batman was done, including the image of Gotham City, which was compared to New York from the 80s, where the character of Batman was interpreted as the metaphor of America, and Joker was described as a reflection of totalitarian system. The last subsection is a description of the movie Batman Returns, where the author especially focused on Max Schreck and Penguin, whose figures were used to picture the relation of politics, the media and the American business. Cat Woman, according to feminist critique, was interpreted as a metaphor of fear of the modern feminism. The third chapter, America of the 90s and Batman Forever, was also divided into three subsections. The first one is the presentation of Joel Schumacher. The second one is the analysis of the Batman Forever movie, where the image of Gotham was compared to the situation of the American Society of the 90s, Batman confronted with the situation of America on the arena of international politic after the fall of the Soviet Union, and the characters of Two-Faces and Riddler described as the reflection of the fed scare phenomenon. The third subsection concerns Batman and Robin, specifically the connection of the movie with kitsch aesthetics. The last chapter, The 9/11 America and The Dark Knight, was divided into three subsections as well. The first one concerns the figure of Christopher Nolan. The second one is an analysis of the film Batman Begins, especially focused on the realistic approach to the plot and visual aesthetics of the movie, but also the fear issue, which was one of the plots and a factor influencing the American society at the same time. The last subsection is the discussion of the Dark Knight movie and the characteristics of Joker’s figure as a reflection of nowadays terrorism problem. |
