This paper focuses on the problems encountered by the translators while rendering the non-standard variety of language in Frances Hodgson Burnett’s novel The Secret Garden. Without the presence of an equivalent of the Yorkshire dialect the translators are forced to resort to a variety of techniques and strategies to render the climate and character of the novel and mark disparities which result from using different varieties of language. Bearing in mind a wide range of solutions and choices which might be applied in rendering dialects, the translators need to remember about the role and functions of children’s literature. Its underlying aim is to educate, set moral examples, teach tolerance and shape and develop language abilities. Literature encourages children to discover the world and learn about its richness and diversity. It prepares them for future encounters with different cultures and mores, and helps them understand their surroundings. As the primary feature of children’s literature points out, its main recipients have no influence on what is being written, translated and published, that is why it is so important for adults to make conscious choices in deciding what is appropriate for the young readers and what kind of values they want to promote. This paper explores the choices made by four Polish translators of The Secret Garden in rendering dialects and evaluate their educative role in the context of the whole novel.

Przedmiotem niniejszej pracy jest analiza czterech przekładów powieści Frances Hodgson Burnett “Tajemniczy ogród” na język polski. Analiza ma na celu zbadanie strategii przekładowych, zastosowanych przez tłumaczy w celu oddania specyfiki dialektu stosowanego przez autorkę w omawianej powieści. Badając wybory dokonywane przez tłumaczy, brano pod uwagę zarówno sposób oddania regionalnej odmiany języka, jak i jego wpływ na odbiór książki należącej do kanonu literatury dziecięcej. Znaczenie dialektu występującego w powieści „Tajemniczy ogród” jest podkreślane zarówno poprzez język, jak i umiejscowienie akcji w XIX wieku w hrabstwie Yorkshire. Właściwe oddanie dialektu, którym porozumiewają się główni bohaterowie powieści, stanowi istotny element w procesie przekładu. Poznawcza i edukacyjna funkcja literatury dziecięcej sprawia, że tłumacz musi dokonywać takich wyborów, które z jednej strony podkreślają obcą odmianę języka i wprowadzą element nowej kultury, a z drugiej - by poprzez swoją odmienność od standardowego sposobu porozumiewania, nie zniechęciły dziecka do czytania książki.
