abstract in English:	This thesis is about the January Uprising in Polish prose across different literary periods. The January Uprising was an event that took place in the years 1863 and 1864, with many patriotic Poles coming together in a rebellion, an attempt to liberate their nation from the Russian yoke and restore the sovereignty of their homeland. Although the uprising ended in failure, it played a huge role in both the history of Poland and Polish literature. Writers from many periods addressed the events of 1863 and 1864 in their works. My thesis covers three representatives of Polish literature from various periods who wrote about the uprising, and in successive chapters I discuss selected literary works by them that make reference to my theme. These writers are Eliza Orzeszkowa, a Positivist; Stefan Żeromski, a writer from the Young Poland (modernist) period; and Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz, a contemporary writer. The last chapter of my thesis looks at three literary motifs of my choosing frequently employed in works on the January Uprising: the grave, the forest and the river. The thesis as a whole illustrates how different writers conceived of the human existence during the January Uprising, and outlines the impacts of this event on the Poles as these writers perceived them. In addition the thesis conceived that traditions of the January Uprising is actually in Polish prose across different literary periods.
abstract in other languages:	Praca ta dotyczy tematyki powstania styczniowego w polskiej prozie na przestrzeni różnych epok literackich. Powstanie styczniowe to wydarzenie historyczne, które miało miejsce w latach 1863 i 1864. Wtedy to wielu Polaków - patriotów, podniosło bunt narodowowyzwoleńczy, aby wyzwolić się od Rosji i odzyskać niepodległość ojczyzny. Mimo że powstanie to zakończyło się klęską, odegrało ogromną rolę zarówno w historii Polski jak i w polskiej literaturze. Pisarze różnych epok w swych dziełach chętnie powracali do wydarzeń z 1863 i 1864 roku. W mojej pracy uwzględniłam trzech przedstawicieli różnych okresów polskiej literatury, piszących o tym powstaniu i w kolejnych rozdziałach omówiłam ich wybrane dzieła literackie nawiązujące do tematu pracy. Ci pisarze to: Eliza Orzeszkowa - przedstawicielka prozy Pozytywizmu, Stefan Żeromski jako przykład pisarza Młodopolskiego i Jarosław Iwaszkiewicz - twórca literatury współczesnej. Ostatni z rozdziałów pracy dotyczy trzech wybranych motywów literackich, jakie są najczęściej spotykane w dziełach mówiących o powstaniu styczniowym. Te motywy to: mogiła, las i rzeka. Cała praca magisterska pokazuje jak różni pisarze postrzegali ludzką egzystencję w czasie powstania styczniowego oraz nakreśla skutki tego wydarzenia dla Polaków, o jakich wspominali Ci twórcy, a także pokazuje, że tradycja powstania styczniowego jest obecna w polskiej literaturze różnych epok.
