abstract in English:
The article presented here is an effect of the author's research on the Urdu language and literature, carried during her visit to Pakistan in January-February 2004. Its aim is to present briefly the position and role of the Urdu language in contemporary Pakistan. Urdu is here discussed successively: as one of the ethnic Pakistani languages; as the national language of the country (here the language policy of Pakistan is also shortly described); as a Pakistani lingua franca; as a medium of instruction in schools and the subject of the government language-teaching policy; as an ideology-carrying language; finally as a language of contemporary literature and media.
