The traditional approach to words as virtual components of sense leads to unsolvable problems on account of the non-isomorphic relation between the formal and the semantic dimensions. In order to overcome the problems, the authors of the article make a distinction between the lexical and the communicative meaning. They assume that elementary units of communicative sense have their formal equivalents, i.e. predicate-argument confi gurations which can be elaborated and actualized in the process of communication.
