The article presents the understanding of the idea of sublimity by Edmund Burke as an announcement of psychoanalytic studies on aesthetical phenomena, especially these on the phenomenon of "das Unheimliche". Firstly, Burke reveals an acting of the pulsation in the experience of sublimity, and even conveys the polarity between the pulsation of Eros and the pulsation of self-preservation; this studies show certain similarity to the psychoanalytical theory and the notions of Eros and Tanathos. Secondly, the defining of the sublime in the terms of negative pleasure by Burke, that is to say of “delight”, is the first formulation of the determinant dynamics of the subjective experience developed by Freud. Thirdly, we find can in Burke’s studies the unique awareness of the mimetic processes of sublimation of the abject. While for German classical aesthetics abjection is excluded from the field of aesthetical experience, then in the inquiries of this English philosopher we perceive a reflection on sublimated abjection in biblical psalms. That reference to the empirical material of the work of art led Burke to avoid the dogmatism of German aesthetics. What is more, these considerations also show similarity with the studies by Julia Kristeva; her psychoanalytic theory underlines the role of the abjection as the material of sublimation in literature.
